When it opened in 1923, people would brag that the Magnolia Building was the biggest building south of Washington, D.C and it remained tallest in Texas for two decades. In 1934, Magnolia Petroleum Company erected a large `)oil derrick`) on the roof that supported two 30 by 50 foot red neon signs in the image of Pegasus. The flying red horse, would remain the symbol of the Mobil Oil company through its history (and Mobil as a part of Exxon Mobil Corp. still uses the logo today). In 1977, Mobil moved their headquarters out downtown and the sign and building were given to the City of Dallas. The building was purchased in 1997 by Denver developers who converted the old office building into a 330-room luxury hotel catering to the business traveler. This high-rise luxury hotel in downtown Dallas offers loft-style standard rooms and extended-stay suites with attractive, spacious interiors. Over the years, the skyscraper had become outdated and in 1997 the sign was turned off. As a part of the Dallas Millennium Celebration, the Flying Red Horse neon sign was relit at midnight to bring in 2000.

Three are placed on the outside in a triangular pattern and they house elevators that offer the passengers a view as they ride up or down. The center one houses stairs and mechanical shafts. The top of the tower is a three level structure, also constructed of poured in place concrete. Surrounding this top is a geodesic dome formed with aluminum struts. At the intersection of the aluminum members are 260 lights that are kept turned on most of the evening hours. However, at certain times during the evening, the lights flash to different patterns for a special light show.

Representing the waters of four continents, three oceans and various seas, the aquarium gives a glimpse of the underwater world. The Orinoco – Secrets of the River rainforest exhibit represents the relatively unknown South American Orinoco River basin. Located entirely in Venezuela, the Orinoco River begins along the Venezuela-Brazil border in the Parima Mountain Range and continues approximately 16,000 miles (25,750 km) before it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The tropical rainforest and savannas in this area are home to unparalleled concentrations of flora and fauna. Located at the southern tip of the African continent is a diverse and fascinating region. South Africa contains nine natural biomes, ranging from desert in the west to evergreen forest in the east. Dominated by a central plateau, the region has no navigable rivers. The South Africa outdoor, lagoon-like exhibit represents both plants and animals from this area.
